The WVCH Upgrade |

Rather than run up my cell bill being on hold trying to call the show, I'll share the news here. We're doing a big upgrade at 740. Programming we get
from Ambassador and Focus on the Family networks is being shifted to a new satellite FTP receiver. The cutoff date for these networks on our old satellite
receiver has been changed a few times as more and more bugs are being worked out re: file naming, audio quality, and questions for those who play these feeds
straight to air. This new box is a powerful tool, and I can see the secular networks perhaps going to some form of this for their own content delivery.
We're also putting in a brand new automation system; still ENCO, but its latest version. Once we get all this sorted out, we'll have total redundancy
and immense backup capability.

Is this the XPS box that Clear Channel is converting to? ABC Radio is converting July 15th as well. Good going, Dave. Sounds like a lot of work.

Joe,
Nope. This box is called AMBOS. Go to www.amb-os.com for info. You'll find a manual for it there, too... |

Thanks, Dave -
Yeah, this is the secular version of the new platform that will replace the Starguide III system. Does file storage and all ... the CC version does copy splitting, delay program play and all that snazzy stuff. Sounds cool ... and is a nice unit. FTP delivery now the way to go.

I've never seen 3-and change GB of hard drive space fill up as quickly as I've seen with this receiver. All audio is in .mp2 format, and we're
running at 44.1 kHz. Sounds pretty good, all told. I'm changing the default output ext to .wav to keep the new ENCO box happy once we get it on the air.
We're putting as much of the present audio inventory as we can into the new ENCO box before we get it on the air...

Did the same here. Running 44khz CD quality on AM makes no sense. You can't hear the difference with the bandpass through the xmtr much anyway. Not that it
sounds bad, it doesn't, but CD quality takes up twice as much space that the resolution need be if you have storage space needs. The features, however, are
pretty slick. Can now regionalize spot insertion instead of by "zone" like before.
Can also eliminate spot buys from markets not served and replaced with other spots ... something we couldn't do before. Now, don't have to worry about those pesky "kill orders" for net news spots that shouldn't run in our market. That's good. A lot of technology here. A bit much for one station like ours ... perfect for clusters (Can do 30 relay closures at once!) but that's progress!

When will WVCH get some "real" programming instead of 9th tier crap so it can afford some "real" equipment and build-out a "real"
facility to 50kw like it's supposed to, thus serving a "real" market instead of the teeny one it's been serving from Chester forever?
Or, why not throw some migrant worker programming on that thing? It should be taken off the air. Six watts at night. All religion. Brokered. Enough of those around, even in metro Philadelphia. Free up the spectrum. And no streaming, especially with that awful night power? What are they thinking, there, Dave? Not our friend Dave's fault ... but this isn't "local service."
